Cassie · The Slowest Race in the West · story about taking your time · cowboy story for kids · story to fall asleep

A funny bedtime story for kids, straight out of the Wild West. In the dusty little town of Cactus-Ville, everybody dreams of being the very fastest. Every cowboy and every cowgirl, that is, except Cassie and her trusty pony Tornado, officially the slowest pair in the whole West, and, would you believe it, really rather proud of the fact.

Instead of getting cross about all the teasing, Cassie has one of her famously brilliant ideas. She will go and organise THE slowest race the world has ever seen, the one and only race where the very last one to cross the line is crowned the grand winner, and where dawdling along as slowly as you can is the whole entire point. And there, well, Tornado suddenly becomes absolutely, utterly unbeatable.

The whole town turns out for the great slow-motion showdown, and the giggles come thick and fast as the racers do their level best to go absolutely nowhere in a hurry. Hooves barely shuffle, tails flick lazily in the sun, and Tornado plods along toward glory at his own happy pace. It is the silliest, slowest, most joyful contest Cactus-Ville has ever held. Tornado has finally found the one race in the world that he was born to win, and he savours every slow step of it.

This is a story that sparkles with humour and good cheer, made for a proper belly laugh. And it slips in, ever so quietly, a lovely little truth: you do not have to be the fastest or the strongest to be the very best at being yourself. Behind every giggle, there is a warm and reassuring idea: that the things that make you different can be your very best strengths.

It is the kind of warm, funny tale that lets a child laugh right out loud and then settle, content in the knowledge that their own pace is exactly the right one.

A screen-free audio story for children ages 3 to 5, lovely to listen to at bedtime or on the way home in the car. And even after a good laugh, the Tilibou ending stays soft and quiet, without music, to help everyone settle before the night. 🤠
