SaaSpocalypse 4: There is No SaaSpocalypse with Alex Boyd and Mac Martine of Wildfront
What if the SaaS apocalypse everyone's been bracing for isn't actually happening? Alex Boyd and Mac Martine, the bootstrapped co-founders behind Wildfront, ViewExport, and the newly launched Demandbird, join Pascal Levy-Garboua to argue that AI won’t kill SaaS, it will just expose the businesses that had no real moat to begin with.
The SaaSpocalypse headlines were loud this year. Alex and Mac don’t buy it.
They explain why they've become pickier acquirers now that AI disruption risk is mispriced: too many sellers are pricing businesses as if AI won't touch their revenue, and too many buyers are willing to overpay on that assumption. The moats they'll still pay for are narrow and specific: deep integration complexity, hard-to-get compliance and security certifications, and a simple pricing advantage over bloated incumbents.
They also detail a real-world case of generative engine optimization (GEO) in action: ViewExport is now racking up thousands of ChatGPT citations a month, driving free signups without any SEO panic, even as raw website clicks decline. Their read: the clicks that disappeared were never buyers anyway, and AI answer engines are sending higher-intent traffic than they're losing.
On the product side, Alex and Mac walk through how they built Demandbird, a cross-platform social scheduler, in under a month of focused work using AI, and why they've deliberately built it to resist the "automate everything" instinct flooding social platforms with bot-driven content. Their marketing, meanwhile, has gotten more human, not more automated, as a direct bet against AI saturation.
They also open up their internal operations: a Slack bot that auto-profiles every new signup, a homemade Stripe revenue-recognition system built with Claude Code, and a hiring rule that puts budget for audience and reach ahead of any full-time headcount.
