Halloween · The House That Was Scary for Nothing · story about not judging others · gentle Halloween · bedtime story

That evening, in Pumpkin Hollow, Zélie and Réglisse were strolling right at the end of the path, where no one ever goes anymore. Because at the end of the path there is an old, leaning house, with shutters that bang and boards that creak, that everyone calls the Scary House. Réglisse begs that they don't go that way: everyone knows it's haunted, it creaks, it bangs, it moans in the night.

But Zélie pricks up her ears and really listens to the sound the house makes. And the more she listens, the less it sounds like a scary noise. «Don't you think it's more of a sad noise?» Drawing closer, ever so gently, they finally understand: it is neither a ghost nor a monster. It sounds more like someone crying softly.

Because the Scary House, in truth, is above all a very lonely house. Since no one comes to visit anymore, it feels abandoned, and all its creaks are just its big sobs. It only takes Zélie and Réglisse going in, lighting a little lamp, speaking to it kindly and keeping it company, for its shutters to stop banging with sadness.

This story helps your child look beyond appearances, and understand that what frightens us sometimes hides something sad or lonely, that just needs a little kindness. It gently tames the fear of dark houses and night noises, filling them with tenderness rather than shivers. A lovely message about empathy.

And when the old house, comforted at last, lights up at every window and now creaks with happiness, it holds nothing frightening anymore: it even becomes the cosiest spot in the Hollow. The story then settles gently down, warmed by this brand-new friendship, right in time to close your eyes.

Zélie doesn't let herself be swept along by other people's fear, and she doesn't judge the house by its reputation: she listens before believing what she's told. Taking the time to understand what frightens us, instead of running away, is the whole spirit of Tilibou bedtime stories. And in the soft night, Réglisse's bell chimes quietly, like a little reassuring tune.

A gentle, screen-free Halloween story for toddlers from age 3, lovely to share at bedtime, in the car, or at nap time. As always with Tilibou, the ending stays soft and quiet, without music, so your child can drift toward sleep without anyone being startled awake. 🎃
