A bedtime story for children. In Bellhill, in the evening, once class is over, a small group of children always stays behind at after-school care, waiting to be picked up. That evening, right at the top of the school's pointy roof, something round, striped red and yellow, glints in the last light: the class's big ball has flown off all by itself, carried away by a mischievous gust of wind, and tomorrow is the big game.

At the fire station, Nino and Marco are polishing Big Red when the phone's little bell rings. Bruno the mayor is already there, his sash trailing on the ground as always, convinced it's about to rain that very night and that every fire station in the country must be called. Captain Marta asks him to breathe for a moment: first, they'll take a calm look.

The big ladder reaches the edge of the roof, but the ball is farther off, on the steep slope where the tiles turn fragile. Marco tries the pole and the net, takes aim three times, and only sends the ball rolling further away. So Nino looks at the school differently: not the roof, but the back wall, and its tiny round skylight hidden behind a branch of ivy. Too small for a grown-up. Not for him. And up there, right beside the ball, he discovers something else: a nest, with three sleeping baby swallows.

As the story unfolds, your child learns that helping isn't only about getting back what was lost, it's also about protecting whoever is smaller than you. Nino doesn't rush for the ball: he rolls it inch by inch so as not to shake the nest, and then Bruno ties a piece of his sash around the skylight, so everyone knows to pass gently through here this season.

Back at the fire station, Marco takes out his cloth to polish Big Red, and Nino comes to help with a little cloth of his own. They rub away in silence, each on their own side, until the truck shines like a mirror. Then the boots line up, from the biggest to the smallest, and Nino takes his time setting his own down neatly with his fingertips, thinking one last time of the three little birds.

No one in this story gets scolded for failing. Not Marco, not Bruno, not the child who kicked the ball too hard. You try, it doesn't work, you breathe, and you look elsewhere: this way of treating failure as a step forward rather than a fault is the whole spirit of Tilibou bedtime stories. And all the while, in the garage, Big Red blinks his headlights softly, pleased with his evening.
