A bedtime story for children. On Bellhill's square, a strange smell drifts over the cobblestones, a smell of hot sugar turning to burnt. It's coming from Rosa's bakery: she has been preparing the big cake for the village festival since morning. Her old oven, temperamental for years, has decided tonight to heat up twice as hot as it should.

When the fire station arrives, there's smoke but not a single flame: it's just an overcooked cake, nothing more, and it's the only fire of the whole season. Rosa, though, is heartbroken. The festival cake is black on top, night has already fallen, and she keeps saying she'll never have time to make another one.

Marco instinctively reaches for the hose, and Captain Marta stops him just in time: soaking the bakery would flood everything for nothing. They open all the windows and wave dish towels around, but the smoke just swirls around the room. It's Nino who looks somewhere else, not at the smoke but at the oven. He spots the little damper stuck at the back, the one no one ever thinks to open, and with one move the smoke streams outside on its own. Then he flips the cake over: underneath, it's perfect.

As the story unfolds, your child learns that an accident isn't a naughty mistake, and that no one needs to be blamed for things to get fixed. They also discover that you can often save what seemed lost, as long as you look at it from another side.

Everyone pitches in to make a second cake, each with their own task, and it comes out of the oven even better than the first. Back at the fire station, Marco polishes Big Red while telling the story of the mission, the boots line up from the biggest to the smallest, and the evening bell closes the day.

No one tells Rosa she should have kept an eye on her oven. They have her breathe out, as if blowing out a cake candle, and they roll up their sleeves alongside her: this way of fixing things together instead of looking for someone to blame is the whole spirit of Tilibou bedtime stories. And all the while, in the bakehouse, the new dough rests quietly and the oven cools down with tiny little ticks.
