A bedtime story for children. On Bellhill's square, the old stone fountain sings softly, as it does every evening. Bruno the mayor hurries across the square, his sash trailing behind him, holding the big key to the town hall, the one he's always liked to spin around his finger. One spin too many, and plop: the key vanishes to the bottom of the basin, among the coins and the dead leaves.

But tomorrow morning, the whole school's snack party is happening in that very hall. Bruno already pictures disaster: the children out on the sidewalk, the party cancelled, and he paces in circles, repeating that it's all his fault. The fire station arrives, soft nee-naw and all, and Captain Marta starts with the one useful thing: asking him to breathe, and to explain calmly.

They try magnet fishing: the key is brass, the magnet catches nothing. They try the little net: the handle is too short, the water too murky. Bruno suggests draining the whole fountain, which would take all night and leave the heron without his pond. So Nino crouches down, simply lowers his nose close to the water, waits for the ripples to settle, and sees what no one else could see. The key isn't at the bottom, it's wedged in a crack in the rim, just below the surface.

As the story unfolds, your child learns that a big problem is often just a small problem looked at the wrong way, and above all that asking for help is nothing to be ashamed of. Bruno, the character who always blows things out of proportion, learns that evening to say he needs a hand before panicking, and nobody teases him for it, not even a little.

The key finds its way back to Bruno's pocket, tucked deep down this time. The heron comes back to perch at the edge of the pond, and the fountain settles back into calm beneath the moon. At the fire station, the boots line up from the biggest to the smallest, and the evening bell closes the day.

Not once does anyone tell Bruno he should have been more careful. They listen to him, they breathe with him, they search together: this way of defusing shame instead of pointing it out is the whole spirit of Tilibou bedtime stories. And all the while, the fountain's water keeps up its steady little sound, like a tap gently rocking you to sleep.
