The map that arrives this evening smells of warm cake, and its letters wobble a little. It comes from Granny Coquille, the oldest and wisest turtle in the sea, whose shell carries a seashell for each thing she has learned. She has forgotten something important: a treasure hidden not at the bottom of the sea, but somewhere inside her own head.

Tomorrow is the smallest baby turtle's very first birthday, and for a hundred years it has been Granny who bakes the big cake everybody looks forward to. Except the recipe has flown out of her memory like a flock of little birds. Moustache wants to go fast and mixes everything any old way: flour, salt, pepper, jam. The result is grey, sticky, and tastes of wet sock.

Nothing is urgent, nothing is ever urgent, smiles Granny: a good cake will not be hurried, and you do not find a treasure by running. Then Tom has an idea. The recipe is not lost at all, it is scattered through the memories of everyone who has tasted that cake over a hundred years.

So they set off to visit their friends. Marée the mermaid remembers the golden honey. The Keeper of Lost Socks, who counts everything, is certain about the three eggs and the pinch of salt. Boum-Boum recalls that the cake was as fluffy as a cloud, because it was beaten for a long time and very gently. Back at Granny's, the recipe lights up again piece by piece, and she offers a little seashell for the chest: the twelfth keepsake.
