Enterprise Wide Search 42: Ryan Duffy - A Banking CDAO's Perspective on AI Transformation
In this episode, co-hosts Emma McGrattan and Ole Olesen-Bagneux sit down with Ryan Duffy, U.S. Chief Data & Analytics Officer at BMO (Bank of Montreal), to explore what it takes to turn AI innovation into meaningful business outcomes in a highly regulated industry.
Drawing on his experience leading data and analytics in financial services, Ryan shares a practical perspective on the evolving responsibilities of data leaders as organizations navigate AI transformation. For him, the Chief Data Officer role goes beyond managing data and enforcing governance: it's about helping the business make better decisions. As AI adoption accelerates, he argues that transformation ultimately depends on people, not just technology.
Together, they explore:
Why data leaders need to focus on better business decisions rather than data and technology for their own sake
How to balance AI innovation with governance, regulatory requirements, and enterprise-wide consistency
Why AI transformation is fundamentally a people transformation, not simply a technology rollout
Why adopting the latest AI technology isn't always the best way to solve a business problem
Why AI should sharpen human thinking and judgment rather than replace them
They also discuss the challenges of balancing centralized governance with federated execution, the risks of chasing new technologies without clear business objectives, and how AI is reshaping the skills and responsibilities of the next generation of data professionals.
🎧 Tune in for a conversation on the realities of leading AI transformation in banking, making technology work for the business, and keeping people at the center of change.
