A bedtime story for children. In Bellhill, a small round town tucked between the market square and the fields, stands an old red fire station with a pointy roof and a big bell right at the top. Tonight, the whole station is having dinner around the big table, and at the end of the bench, so small in his big uniform, sits Nino. In one corner, curled up at the bottom of a boot far too big for him, Pompon, the station's dog, snores softly, dreaming of a great big bone.

Then the phone rings, light as a little bell. On the village square, Praline, Rosa the baker's little cat, has climbed all the way to the top of the big oak tree, frightened by a test firecracker for the festival. She has gone so high she no longer dares move, clinging to the very last branch, tiny in the night. Bruno the mayor wants to call every fire station in the country. Captain Marta, though, never runs: she asks him to breathe first, and to take a good look.

The big ladder rises, and rises, and stops: three branches too short. Marco grabs the megaphone and calls out loudly, and Praline climbs even higher, terrified. So everyone falls silent. And in that silence, Nino looks at the tree differently: not its height, its branches. The thinnest ones cannot hold the ladder or a grown-up, but they can hold a small boy. He climbs without a sound, sits just below the cat, asks nothing of her, and talks to her softly for a long while, until she comes down on her own, branch after branch.

As the story unfolds, your child discovers that being small is not a problem to solve, but sometimes exactly what is needed. They also learn that you don't help someone who is scared by shouting louder, but by sitting down beside them and waiting. This is the founding episode of the collection: the fire station, the characters and the little rituals that return in every story are all gently introduced here.

At the end, everyone heads back to the fire station. Lena, the village nurse, puts a little star-covered bandage on Nino's scraped elbow and adds a kiss right beside it, because the two always work better together. Marco polishes Big Red while telling him all about the mission. Then the boots line up, from the biggest to the smallest, and the smallest of them all finally finds its place.

Captain Marta never scolds Marco for shouting too loud, and never laughs at Bruno's panic. She has everyone breathe, together, the way you blow out a birthday candle, then she listens to the small idea of the smallest one among them: this way of taking an emotion seriously instead of brushing it aside is the whole spirit of Tilibou bedtime stories. And all the while, outside, Bellhill's nee-naw doesn't wail, it whispers, like a lullaby drifting down the street.
