That evening, in Pumpkin Hollow, it was Halloween night, the most beautiful night of the year. But something was missing… Can you feel it too? Usually, in the sky, there is a great round golden moon that lights the whole Hollow with its soft glow. And tonight, the sky was pitch black: the moon was not there. On Lantern Square, everyone suddenly felt a little smaller, a little more alone, even Réglisse, who doesn't like the dark one bit.

Because the dark, says Réglisse, trembling, is where all the things you can't see are hiding, and the things you can't see are the worst. But Zélie keeps her cool: the moon doesn't just disappear like that, it must be somewhere. So, ever so brave, she decides to climb up and find it, to give the Hollow back its lovely soft light.

Searching through the night, Zélie and Réglisse discover that the moon had not run away: for Halloween night, it had simply felt like dressing up too! Hidden behind its costume, it no longer dared show itself. It only takes a little tenderness and a few kind words for it to take off its mask at last and shine once more.

This story helps your child tame the fear of the dark, by showing that the night is not full of dangers, but often full of gentle surprises. It reassures: what you can no longer see has not disappeared, it always comes back, like the moon behind its costume. A lovely message for little ones whom the dark sometimes worries at night.

And when the great round moon reappears at last and floods the Hollow with its golden light, everyone lets out a long sigh of happiness. The night turns soft and reassuring again, the lanterns sparkle, and the story settles gently down, right in time to close your eyes under the nightlight.

Zélie doesn't make fun of Réglisse for being afraid of the dark, and she doesn't say «it's nothing».
