How do you tackle HSE in a world bracing for renewables and the environmental and societal governance of companies?
Speakers:
Xavier Bontemps, international HSE leader with over 35 years’ energy industry leadership experience gained from senior roles at BP, Ineos and Total – and most recently as TotalEnergies’ Corporate HSE Director.
Kate Chauviré, Director, Academic Planning and Coordination, CEDEP
With the acceleration of renewable energy development around the world, Xavier Bontemps draws on his own personal experiences to raise a number of safety challenges that lie ahead for this new and ever evolving industry. These include workplace safety, process safety and environmental and societal acceptability. He then outlines some of the possible solutions. Â
Xavier observes that the traditional approach to safety leadership still applies to renewables and includes felt leadership, performance monitoring, HSE competencies, investigation analysis, recognition and sanctions and communication.Â
Caring for community, people and their surrounding nature is becoming the new license to operate. This goes beyond local legislation and encompasses all stakeholder relations especially with new build projects. Companies are improving their environmental and societal approaches to HSE with talent which is more diverse, more externally focused and more tapped in to NGOs and biodiversity associations. The challenge is to raise this awareness within their companies as part of a new HSE culture.
